Finding where the water leak come from: if you want to fix this problem first figure out the source from where is the water leaking , this very vital work to do as the water leakage have to stop first otherwise it will continue to damage the walls even after repairing. Dry out damaged areas: Before taking out the damaged drywall you first have to dry the area of ceiling which is affected by water damage. What you have to do that, first place down a drop cloth on the area to protect the floor and catch the dust created when the drywall ceiling is removed. If by any chance the damaged area has swelling area, puncture it to liberate the water and have a bucket in place to catch all the water.
Remove water damage ceiling: Make sure that you wear some protection gears or tolls such as safety specs hand cloves and face mask. Now start taking out the damaged drywall by your hand or using a hammer and wrecking bar will be much better. If you find only water stains on the dry panels not the structural damaged, reinstate it by cutting out the only the affected areas. Use a key whole saw for cutting out the damaged areas and cut the hole into a square or rectangular shape; this can be used later or making a patch with another piece of wall.
Repairing process: This process include smoothing of bumps and ridges by sandpaper if left any, small holes then fill out by joint compound which is dried then and smoothen one more time.

Prime painting: This is last step to perform, open the room for ventilation of priming and painting of the ceilings. Giving an even finish to the ceiling is must so take care of that thing for sure; it could be still critical if the damaged portion is less.
